Before booking your trip with any trekking and travel agency, it's important to know whether the company is legally registered with Bhutan's Department of Tourism (DoT) and other relevant travel authorities.
There are companies operating with expired licenses, or that don't observe the legal formalities required by Bhutanese law — and in some cases, so-called trekking and touring agencies run illegally by individuals or freelancers through personal contacts and websites. Some overseas operators have also been found running tours and treks in Bhutan without the required government licenses or appropriate taxes.
Booking with an unauthorized agency, in Bhutan or abroad, carries a real risk of problems arising during your trip. Before confirming your journey with any operator, consider:
- Is the company registered with the proper government authorities?
- Is the company insured against accidents happening to their staff?
- Is the company environmentally conscious?
- Is the company registered with the appropriate authorized travel associations?
- Does the company have its own bank account with a reputable bank?
